Killer Mike

How many times have you heard someone complain that contemporary rap music lacks its modern day Public Enemy equivalent? You’ve probably said it yourself. We all have. But we need to stop. Yeah, Public Enemy is inviolate and irreplaceable, but Killer Mike’s R.A.P. Music is the closest we’re going to get to an ideal soundtrack for a Do the Right Thing remake.

Born in Westside Atlanta, where Mike is both underground royalty and an entrepreneur with his own Barber Shop. Fittingly, he’s the city’s iteration of Ice Cube, universally respected and highly opinionated; the bridge spanning The Dungeon Family, Grand Hustle, and his own Grind Time Records. R.A.P. Music is a collision of north and south so savage that it could create a subduction zone.

Princess Nokia

Recording artist, actress and philanthropist: Rapper Princess Nokia, a.k.a Destiny Nicole Frasqueri, first broke on the New York underground rap scene back in 2010 and has since turned down five record deals.

Embracing feminism and individuality, her tomboyish aesthetic, she’s earned an army of loyal fans all over the world. Frasqueri first caught ears with 2014’s ‘Metallic Butterfly’ – released under the name Wavy Spice – an eccentric electro-soul mixtape that found her oscillating between singing, rapping and beat-poet proselytizing.

In 2016, Frasqueri reinvented herself yet again to become Princess Nokia (a name inspired by the only phone brand available to her income bracket) and jettisoned her soul and electronica influences in favor of tough hip-hop purism. ‘1992’, Princess Nokia’s debut mixtape, was self-released in September 2016 to instant buzz and acclaim. Shortly after signing to Rough Trade an expanded version as ‘1992 Deluxe’ was issued. In December 2018, Metallic Butterfly is a remastered and expanded to a full-length debut album, which Nokia refers to as her “genesis,” including three new bonus tracks.
